AWD or 4x4: which one do you need?

An AWD SUV such as the Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester or Hyundai Tucson sends power to all four wheels when the road gets slippery. That is exactly what the paved mountain roads of Georgia need: the Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi, the ski road to Gudauri, and the road to Mestia. In winter an AWD car grips far better on snow than a front-wheel drive sedan.

A 4x4 with low range, like the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Mitsubishi Pajero or Toyota 4Runner, adds ground clearance and gearing for steep gravel. The Mitsubishi Delica D:5 has four-wheel drive and high ground clearance without low range, and seats seven. Choose one for the Truso and Juta valleys, the side valleys of Svaneti, or if you simply want the most capable car.

Where rental cars may not go

Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region (South Ossetia) are always excluded. Tusheti is only allowed in our 4x4 off-road cars after we agree it with you. The full list is in the rental terms.

Winter driving

The Jvari Pass between Gudauri and Kazbegi can close for hours after heavy snow. Check the road status on the day, leave early and keep the tank full. Snow chains can be added on request: write it in the comments of the booking form.
