From Tbilisi Airport into the city

Tbilisi International Airport is the busiest airport in Georgia: it handled 4.75 million passengers in 2024. Airlines flying here include Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, flydubai, Pegasus, AJet and Georgian Airways. The airport lies about 17 km southeast of central Tbilisi, and one main road, the Kakheti Highway (George W. Bush Avenue), links it to the city. The drive to Freedom Square is about 18 km and takes 25 to 35 minutes, depending on traffic.

Traffic drives on the right. Speed limits are 60 km/h in towns, 90 km/h outside them and 110 km/h on motorways, unless signs show otherwise.

Road trips from Tbilisi Airport

The airport is on the east side of the city, so Kakheti is close and the mountains are a straight run north. Distances are by road from the airport; times are without stops.

  • Sighnaghi and the Kakheti wineries: about 100 km, around 1.5 to 2 hours.
  • Telavi: about 85 km, around 1.5 hours.
  • Mtskheta: about 40 km, 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Kazbegi (Stepantsminda): about 170 km, around 3 hours on the Georgian Military Highway. Our Tbilisi to Kazbegi guide covers every stop.
  • Borjomi: about 175 km, around 2.5 to 3 hours.
  • Kutaisi: about 235 km, around 3.5 hours. You can end the trip at Kutaisi Airport for a fixed one-way fee.

Driving tips for eastern Georgia

  • Speed cameras are common on main roads. Fines follow the number plate and are forwarded to you after the rental.
  • On mountain roads expect trucks, cows and sheep on the road, and tight bends. Overtake only where you can see far ahead.
  • In winter the Gudauri to Kobi section of the road to Kazbegi can close for hours after heavy snow. Check the road status on the morning you drive and take an AWD SUV such as the Toyota RAV4 or Subaru Forester.
  • Kakheti roads are paved and easy, so a hybrid like the Toyota Prius is the cheapest choice there.
  • For police, ambulance or fire, call 112.

Why rent at the airport

Taxis and minibuses (marshrutkas) work well inside Tbilisi, but most road trips start outside it. With the car waiting in arrivals, you skip the taxi into town and the second trip out to a rental office. You can drive straight to Kakheti or north to the mountains, stop at Ananuri or the Jvari Pass when the light is good, and keep your luggage with you all the way.

Airport delivery is free, there is no prepayment, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup. If you would rather spend the first days in the city without a car, we can also deliver it to your hotel in Tbilisi later.

Tbilisi Airport: questions and answers

What if my flight to Tbilisi is delayed or lands at night?

Add your flight number to the booking and we track it. We are in the arrivals hall with a name sign when you actually land, whether that is midday or 4 a.m., so a delay is no problem and you do not need to call us from the plane. Airport delivery is free.

How long is the drive from Tbilisi Airport to the city centre?

It is about 18 km along the Kakheti Highway (George W. Bush Avenue) to Freedom Square. Without traffic it takes about 25 minutes; at rush hour allow 35 minutes or more. If you only need the car later in your trip, we can deliver it to your hotel in Tbilisi instead.

Can I pick up at Tbilisi Airport and return the car in Kutaisi or Batumi?

Yes. One-way rentals have a fixed fee: 120 GEL to Kutaisi and 180 GEL to Batumi. The booking summary adds it automatically, and you pay it at pickup with the rental. This works well if you fly home from Kutaisi Airport or Batumi Airport.

Which car should I rent at Tbilisi Airport for Kazbegi?

From late spring to autumn the road to Stepantsminda is paved all the way, so any car will do, even a Toyota Prius. In snow season take an AWD SUV such as the Toyota RAV4. For the gravel Truso and Juta valleys you need a 4x4 like the Mitsubishi Delica.

Do I pay anything before I land?

No. Booking is free and needs no card details. You pay the full rental at pickup, in cash (GEL, USD or EUR) or by card, after checking the car. Most cars have no deposit; 4x4 off-road and premium cars have a refundable 300 GEL deposit. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
