For Kazbegi, Gudauri and Svaneti choose an AWD SUV such as the Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester or Hyundai Tucson. The roads are paved but steep, and in winter the Cross Pass above Gudauri can be snowy.
For gravel valleys such as Truso and Juta, take a real 4x4: the Mitsubishi Pajero, Toyota 4Runner or Land Cruiser Prado have low range gearing, and the Mitsubishi Delica D:5 adds high ground clearance and room for seven. Tusheti is only allowed with written permission.
