Georgia road trip guides

Routes, road conditions and tips from people who drive them, so you can plan the trip and pick the right car.

Questions and answers

Do I need a 4x4 to travel around Georgia?

Not for the main sights: the roads to Kazbegi, Mestia, Kakheti and Batumi are paved. An AWD car helps in winter and in the mountains, and a 4x4 is only needed for gravel valleys such as Truso and Juta. See our Tbilisi to Kazbegi guide.

Is it safe to drive in Georgia as a tourist?

Yes, with care. The main roads are in good condition, but local driving can be fast and overtaking bold. On mountain roads watch for cattle and trucks, keep to the speed limits because speed cameras are common, and never drink and drive.

Which side of the road do people drive on in Georgia?

On the right, as in most of Europe. Traffic rules and road signs follow European standards.
