The Toyota RAV4 hybrid is the all-rounder of the range. Its 2.5 hybrid system drives the front wheels, and a separate electric motor powers the rear axle when extra grip is needed, so you get all-wheel drive with fuel use of about 5.8 L per 100 km. It seats five, and the trunk takes four large suitcases.
That combination suits the grand tour: up the Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi, west to Kutaisi, north to Mestia and Ushguli in summer, then down to Batumi. In winter the AWD makes it a dependable choice for Gudauri and the Jvari Pass. Gravel valleys like Truso and Juta are rough enough to need a 4x4 with low range, such as the Land Cruiser Prado.
Tip: on a loop of 1,500 km or more, the hybrid's low fuel use adds up to a real saving compared with a petrol SUV of the same size.

Is the Toyota RAV4 hybrid a real all-wheel-drive SUV?
Yes. Besides the hybrid system that drives the front wheels, the RAV4 has a separate electric motor on the rear axle that powers the rear wheels when you pull away or the front wheels lose grip. There is no driveshaft, but it gives useful extra traction on wet, snowy or loose roads. It is not a 4x4 with low range, so rough gravel valleys such as Truso still need a proper off-roader.
Toyota RAV4 or Land Cruiser Prado: do I need the bigger 4x4?
Only if you plan gravel valleys or Tusheti, or need seven seats; for paved roads and mountain routes in any season, the RAV4 is enough. The Land Cruiser Prado adds low range gearing, a body-on-frame build and a third row, and it is approved for Truso, Juta and, with written permission, Tusheti. The RAV4 costs less per day, uses much less fuel and has no deposit.
